Shield’s Own IBM i “New Face”

We are pleased and proud to announce a New Face of our own at Shield! Charlie Hird, son of Chris and I, has joined the team.

After studying Computer Science at Laurentian University, in Sudbury, Ontario, then expanding his outdoor life experiences as an Infanteer in the Canadian Armed Forces, he feels ready for his new challenge.

An active outdoors kind of chap, he turns to cycling in the forest, hunting, urban snow-boarding, maintaining his classic diesel pickup truck, and enjoys blacksmithing. His main talent is delving into and solving computer puzzles. An adept 3D model designer and printer, he has created race and heavy lift drones from scratch and to be honest wanted to avoid the ‘office’ environment.

Since joining the team, he has helped remodel the server room, installing a new IBM SAN and setting up the Fiber links to allow us to build IBM i VM’s for development and testing, a lot easier than the existing setup of IBM i hosting IBM i. Another challenge he undertook was to write some C++ code to interface between Excel and DB2 on IBM i….. He is hooked!

Going forward as a member of the Reserves based in Hamilton with The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada (Princess Louise’s), he’ll be able to grasp a corner of both worlds…. and take Shield into new pastures too – no pressure Charlie!
