We’ve highlighted AAG’s ability to send passive check results and control commands directly from IBM i to Nagios XI, providing immediate notification of events while allowing IBM i processes to manage Nagios monitoring automatically.
Also provided a simple example of how the technology can be implemented on the IBM i.
Originally, this capability was available only with Nagios XI. We’re pleased to announce that it is now included in the Nagios Core distribution supplied with AAG, making these advanced automation features available to every AAG customer.
For IBM i users, very little changes—apart from a few updated command descriptions. On the Linux side, installation is straightforward, requiring installation of the NRDP server and a simple configuration of the authentication tokens used to establish secure communication between IBM i and Nagios.
This enhancement was driven by feedback from customers who are running smaller environments. While they may have fewer systems to manage, they are equally focused on reducing manual administration and increasing operational efficiency.
Previously, planned IBM i maintenance often required an administrator to log in to Nagios to disable monitoring or suppress notifications before beginning work, then remember to re-enable everything afterwards. This repetitive task was not only inconvenient but also introduced the risk of human error.
With AAG, that manual intervention is no longer necessary. Simply include the appropriate AAG commands within your IBM i procedures or CL programs, and monitoring is automatically suspended, resumed, or controlled as required. The result is a smoother maintenance process, fewer unnecessary alerts, and greater confidence that monitoring will always return to its normal state when the work is complete.
It’s another example of how AAG helps IBM i administrators replace repetitive manual tasks with intelligent automation—saving time, reducing operational overhead, and allowing staff to focus on higher-value activities.
